You can test this by running something demanding with Adaptive V-sync enabled. Tearing absolutely does happen when your fps drops below your monitor refresh rate (or even when they are the same but just out of sync).

I've seen a PS3 playing Skyrim, for instance, and it's clearly dropping to about 15fps at times, and is quite often at I would say about 25. Sometimes consoles' fps drops below 30fps. This can happen in console games if the FPS is not locked and/or not stable (for example Unity dipped below 30 FPS quite often).Īs soon as your FPS is not evenly dividable by your monitors refresh rate, you get stuttering. This is fixed with Vsync because it forces the FPS to be an even multiplier of your monitor's refresh rate. You can see this very clearly in panning shots. Just as not all movies are classics, and not all cars have the most riveting. Not every game can be perfect in terms of game play and art. This causes the frames to be on the screen an uneven amount of time, and that's what we experience as stuttering. Screen tearing or vsync stutter is a broken product. Red indicates one frame, and blue indicates the next frame.įrame 1 is displayed for 2 monitor updates.įrame 2 is displayed for 3 monitor updates.įrame 3 is displayed for 2 monitor updates.įrame 4 is displayed for 3 monitor updates. Your monitor has to display 60 FPS, but you can't divide 60 by 24 evenly. This happens all the time in movies since they are ~24FPS. Stuttering = When your FPS can not be evenly divided by your monitor's refresh rate.

This will only happen on consoles if your TV does not support 60Hz (I have seen some 50Hz TVs) and you play one of the few console games that are 60FPS.Įdit: I have heard that this can happen when your monitor and GPU is out of sync as well, but I have not seen this happen myself. KH2:FM & AI3:GP saves, KH Save is slightly busted but serviceable for reproducing the issue (it's a save made while the game was modded, I tested that it works well enough without the mod).Screen tearing = When your computer is rendering more frames than you monitor can display, which causes two frames to appear at the same time (top and bottom of your screen are 2 different moments). You can also try to use Fast Sync or Enhanced Sync in conjunction with Scanline Sync, as documented in 4.2 Fast Sync and Enhanced Sync. You may need to perform this more than once to switch the behaviour but you're likely to toggle the behaviour with only one click on the Taskbar and then one click on the Render window. You can either try to live with the occasional screen tearing (if it’s not too distracting and doesn’t occur that often) or reduce the game’s graphical settings and/or render resolution.

It has a very active development community that is constantly working on compatibility and adding features - the code is tweaked so often that new subversions (SVNs) of the emulator are compiled every day. The problem can be easily toggled on/off with a high success rate of behaviour change by clicking back and forth between the Taskbar and PCSX2 Render window, repeating the action can resolve the problem (remains resolved for multiple hours at least, if you don't multi-task again). PCSX2 is an open source emulator that allows you to play PlayStation 2 games on your PC. ie: 60FPS game looking like it's running at 30 FPS, 30FPS game looking like it's running at 15FPS etc. Completing the above actions has a very high probability of inducing a Frame Pacing issue where the gameplay visually looks to be missing half its frames.Return focus to the gameplay window of PCSX2.While playing Kingdom Hearts 2: Final Mix or Atelier Iris 3: Grand Phantasm, multi-task to another program or click the Taskbar to remove focus from PCSX2.Multi-tasking and then returning to the gameplay window of PCSX2 can induce Frame Pacing issues where it constantly frequently behaves very poor/stuttery/choppy while FPS and percentage remains excellent according to the programs title bar.
